Reporting directly to the District Manager, this role plays a pivotal part in comprehensive forest management, overseeing planning, permitting, timber harvest, road construction, silviculture, client reporting, and budgeting. You'll also handle additional duties assigned by the District and Region Manager.

AFM’s team of professionals is focused on meeting client needs by providing a complete range of forestry services including land and wildlife management, land sale and acquisition services, forest inventory and design, growth and yield modeling, cash flow projections, environmental services, appraisal, forest resource data management and harvest scheduling.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Surpass client expectations for natural resource management and client service.
  • Solicit and secure relationships with new clients.
  • Provide timber harvest, management plan, forest inventory, forest carbon, land management and road construction services for a variety of clients.
  • Contract administration duties - focused on negotiating client and service provider contracts; implementing contracts and ensuring contract responsibilities are met.
  • Employ technical tools for developing harvest plans, implementing timber harvests, road construction projects, and other associated land management activities.
  • Assist in the development and administering of annual budgets.
  • Participate in forest inventory projects individually or with a team.
  • Supervise contracted services, including certifying completion of work for payment. This position will be the primary contact with logging and road construction contractors.
  • Interact and communicate as a member of an 8 (eight) person team focused on providing custom natural resource solutions that surpass client expectations.     
  • Working knowledge and experience applying forestry skills to plan and implement timber harvest operations, road construction projects, silvicultural prescriptions, timber revenue estimates, and forest product utilization.
  • Ability to work in office and remote field environments. Utilization of various means of transportation including all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and snowmobiles. Required to drive, ride, or walk through rough  terrain in difficult weather conditions, in daylight and dark, in wet and dry environments. The job involves working long periods outdoors, including adverse weather conditions.
  • Monitor BMP and EMS compliance to ensure third-party SFI Certification Potential travel and ability to function as a team member on large projects throughout the U.S.
  • Exposure to loud noise, extreme temperatures, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, and inclement weather. Exposure to heavy equipment operations.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to drive, walk, wade, stand, talk, and listen. The employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, reach with hands and arms, lift, and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Fulfill other assignments from the District and Region Manager.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry or commensurate level of technical experience in field forestry operations.
  • Ideal candidate with 5+ years of experience. 
  • Experience with forest operations.
  • Working knowledge of GPS devices and GIS applications (will train specific applications for this job).
  • Working knowledge of water quality protection through best management practices (BMPs) and state regulations. (Will train specific regulatory requirements for this job)
  • Familiarity with northeastern US tree species, silvics, and silviculture.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Preferred experience with ArcGIS software.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and listening skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient team player with adaptability.
  • Maine professional forester license, or ability to obtain a license in the first two years of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Soft Skills: communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, attention to detail, time management and decision-making.

Work Environment:
This role balances office work with remote field assignments. Fieldwork often involves solo ventures into remote forest lands accessed by private unimproved roads, necessitating off-road driving skills. Expect extended periods outdoors, including adverse weather conditions like summer heat and extreme cold. Travel to properties across Maine is required, potentially involving out-of-town and overnight stays (expenses covered).
